Preserving culture is about resilience, not nostalgia.

During a session at the Climate Mobility Pavilion, Hon. Minister Rohey John Manjang emphasized The Gambia’s commitment to preserving cultural heritage amid the climate crisis.

She highlighted that climate change threatens cultural and economic resources, particularly in tourism, due to coastal erosion. Protecting culture will be central to The Gambia’s National Adaptation Plan and Climate Change Policy.

Ongoing projects such as UNEP/GEF-6 and WACA focus on ecosystem restoration and the safeguarding of cultural sites. Manjang proposed creating a Global Alliance for Cultural and Heritage Resilience under the auspices of UNESCO and UNFCCC to support vulnerable countries, stressing the importance of landscapes as part of heritage.
