Demonstrators in Madagascar are calling for ongoing peaceful protests after the removal of the energy minister due to unrest over water and energy shortages.

President Andrey Rojoelina’s measures, including the minister’s dismissal, have not quelled the protests, which have resulted in police using teargas and rubber bullets, causing at least five deaths and widespread looting in Antananarivo.

The demonstrations, led primarily by students and young workers, focus on dissatisfaction with power outages and inadequate services. The government has imposed a nighttime curfew as demonstrations are expected to continue, while President Rojoelina has labeled the protests as destabilizing.
