France has suspended its counterterrorism collaboration with Mali and expelled two diplomats after Yann Vezilier, a French citizen and embassy member, was captured and accused of aiding a coup.

In response, Mali ordered five French embassy staff to leave. Since 2022, Mali has shifted military support from France to Russia amid a rising Islamist insurgency threatening supply routes to Senegal.
