The Mercator map from the 16th century distorts the size of Africa, making it appear smaller than it is. Africa is 14 times larger than Greenland, three times larger than Canada, and more than one and a half times bigger than Russia.

The African Union supports the “Correct The Map” campaign, advocating for the Equal Earth map as a more accurate representation of country sizes and territories.

This initiative aims to replace distorted maps and promote the Equal Earth map to global institutions, such as the World Bank and UNESCO. While the World Bank is moving away from Mercator maps for static images, Google Maps still defaults on mobile.

A Caribbean leader has criticized the Mercator map as a representation of “power and dominance.”
