Guinea’s military regime has suspended the activities of three political parties, including the Rally of the Guinean People, ahead of a constitutional referendum on September 21.

There are concerns that junta leader General Mamadi Doumbouya may pursue the presidency. Opposition groups plan demonstrations on September 5, accusing Doumbouya of consolidating power.

Since the military takeover in 2022, protests have been banned, and several political parties have been dissolved, raising worries among international human rights organizations about threats to democracy during this transitional period.
