African leaders, led by President William Ruto of Kenya and President Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe, launched a unified peace initiative for the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) on August 1st to address the ongoing security crisis.
The initiative combines efforts from the East African Community (EAC), Southern African Development Community (SADC), and the African Union (AU) into a coordinated plan based in Addis Ababa.
Ruto emphasized the importance of this unified approach, given the dire humanitarian and security situation affecting the region.
Previously, M23 rebels, supported by Congo and Rwanda, signed a ceasefire declaration in July, marking progress in one of Africa’s longest-running conflicts, which has led to significant violence and displacement.
The African Union and the United States have facilitated peace agreements, reflecting a critical moment in the pursuit of stability after decades of conflict.
M23 remains the largest armed group involved, causing substantial casualties and displacing millions.
