Since the start of the turtle bycatch reduction program, over 100 dead turtles have been found along The Gambia’s coastline, primarily due to harmful fishing practices and the use of improper gear.
Conservationist Sulayman Njie highlights the role of human activities in these deaths. Njie and his team monitor coastal areas on a weekly basis, noting high turtle mortality rates, particularly in Tanji. They have initiated a “turtle village” project aimed at growing rescued turtles to improve their survival rates before release.
