Tanzania’s Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa will not run for re-election in the upcoming October parliamentary polls, a surprising decision influenced by his faith.

He will remain a senior official in the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party and support President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who is seeking re-election.

Majaliwa’s exit follows the announcement of the Vice-President’s retirement, indicating a potential shift towards strengthening President Samia’s leadership.

The main opposition party, Chadema, is banned from participating in the elections, and its leader, Tundu Lissu, faces treason charges amid ongoing tensions between the government and the opposition.

Rights groups have criticized President Samia for increased repression despite some efforts to ease restrictions. General elections are expected later this year, with CCM likely to maintain control.
