Senegal’s Supreme Court has upheld Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko’s defamation conviction against tourism minister Mame Mbaye Niang on July 1, 2025, requiring Sonko to pay 200 million CFA francs in damages.

The court had previously confirmed a six-month suspended sentence for Sonko in January 2024, following his appeal.

Sonko, facing multiple court cases since 2021, was disqualified from the last presidential election due to this conviction.

Despite the court’s final decision, he plans to appeal again, though legal experts indicate the matter is concluded.
