Mali’s transitional President, General Assimi Goïta, is visiting Moscow for discussions with President Vladimir Putin aimed at strengthening ties between Mali and Russia ahead of the Russia–Africa Summit.

Key topics include security, energy, and transport cooperation. Since seizing power through coups in 2020 and 2021, Mali has shifted its alliances from the West to Russia, dissolved political parties, and extended Goïta’s rule for at least five more years despite previous election promises.

The visit comes after the Wagner group was replaced by the Africa Corps in Mali, which is assisting in combating jihadist insurgencies.
