Mario Mendy has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Maram Jaw by Justice ZN Mboob in the High Court. The conviction arose from a stabbing incident that occurred on May 11, 2021, in Karewan Village.
Mendy, who entered a plea of not guilty, faced a robust prosecution supported by 13 witnesses and compelling evidence, including a DNA analysis that linked bloodstains to the victim’s mother.
The defense contended that the evidence was circumstantial and questioned its reliability, asserting that there was no direct connection to Mendy and that another individual had been the last person seen with the victim. Nevertheless, the court deemed the evidence sufficient to establish Mendy’s guilt and confirmed the presence of malice aforethought.
In delivering the sentence, Justice Mboob considered the gravity of the crime and its impact on the victim’s family, ultimately opting for life imprisonment rather than imposing the death penalty. The judgment noted that both parties have the right to appeal.
