An Egyptian man, Ahmed Ebid, was sentenced to 25 years in prison by a London court for orchestrating the smuggling of individuals from North Africa to Italy.

Ebid, who arrived in the U.K. in October 2022, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to assist unlawful immigration and was part of a criminal operation that transported more than 3,700 people under perilous conditions.

Valued at £12 million ($16 million), this operation was deemed a significant human trafficking scheme. Authorities emphasized that Ebid exhibited a reckless disregard for the safety of migrants, even instructing his associates to inflict harm on those found in possession of mobile phones.
