The Fulbe Africa Organization has condemned Gambia’s Minister of Lands and Religious Affairs, Hamat Bah, for linking most border crimes to herders.
During a meeting with Banjul Muslim elders over the Eid festivals, Mr. Bah attributed many border crimes in the sub-region to jihadists and herders, calling for strengthened border security. However, Fulbe Africa criticized his remarks as “dangerous,” asserting that placing the blame for violence and jihadist attacks on livestock herdsmen is misleading.
“This statement is not only false and irresponsible, especially coming from a state minister, but it also risks negatively stereotyping the decent herdsmen and Fulbe people in The Gambia and West Africa as a whole. The honorable minister’s comments are misleading and dangerous, as they unjustly stigmatize Fulbe herdsmen, putting Fulbe communities at risk of potential attacks and resentment,” the organization stated.
The Fulbe people are recognized for being peaceful and law-abiding, coexisting harmoniously among themselves and other ethnic groups. “We believe that when leaders speak, they should inspire hope, not create uncertainty and despair within the country. Hon. Bah’s statement is not supported by any credible reports, evidence, or intelligence linking Fulbe herdsmen to unrest,” the organization emphasized.
