Africell has generously donated essential food supplies and cooking utensils to the Gambia Prison Services, addressing critical needs at the overcrowded Mile 2 Central Prison.
This donation includes staple items such as rice, oil, and large cooking pots, which will enhance the living conditions of inmates who are currently facing food supply challenges.
The donation ceremony on Tuesday at Mile 2 Central Prison marked a significant moment for the Gambia Prison Services (GPS). Officials from the prison received much-needed support from the telecommunications company. Musa Cisse, Corporate Officer at Africell, emphasized the company’s commitment to corporate social responsibility, stating, “Every individual, regardless of their circumstances, deserves dignity and access to necessities.”
The prison authorities, struggling to maintain adequate food supplies, expressed deep gratitude for Africell’s generous contribution. Deputy Director Modou Jarju remarked that this donation will help alleviate some of the challenges associated with food preparation and encouraged other organizations to follow suit. “Overcrowding and limited resources have often been cited as concerns,” he noted. Youth adviser to the president, Lamin K. Saidy, commended Africell for its dedication to corporate social responsibility.
Hendry Gomez, a special presidential adviser, called for additional support initiatives from the company to assist in rehabilitating inmates. As part of a broader initiative to support vulnerable communities, Africell plays a crucial role in community development in The Gambia.
The ceremony concluded with a tour of the prison facility, marking a collaborative effort to improve conditions within correctional facilities and underscoring the importance of private sector involvement in uplifting marginalized communities.
