Gambia is currently in discussions with India regarding potential collaboration to leverage India’s expertise in mining, particularly in discovering and extracting critical minerals.

Nani Juwara, the Minister of Petroleum and Energy in Gambia, has confirmed that discussions have taken place with the Indian ambassador to Gambia to explore opportunities for cooperation with the Indian government in critical minerals. These minerals are of strategic importance for economic development and national security. The minister has conveyed his optimism about the ongoing talks, emphasizing Gambia’s interest in seeking support from India and Indian companies in uncovering critical minerals within its territory. He has stressed the importance of forging strong partnerships with companies possessing the relevant expertise to operate effectively in Gambia.

India has identified 30 critical minerals essential for various sectors, including defense, agriculture, energy, pharmaceuticals, and telecommunications. The minister has also underscored the potential for collaboration in the petroleum sector, citing Gambia’s potential oil reserves, like those found in neighboring Senegal. Such a partnership can significantly enhance Gambia’s energy sector and overall economic prospects.
