The opposition Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC) has urged its supporters and Gambians to rely on the government to ensure a successful hosting of the OIC Summit in Banjul.

The Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC) has called on all Gambians to unite and support the government to ensure the success of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Summit in Banjul. In a statement shared with The Standard, the party leader emphasized the significance of the summit, which is the second-largest gathering in the world. The OIC platform promotes unity and allows The Gambia to showcase its image. Despite our differences, we must work together to make the summit successful.

With representatives from 57 member states set to attend, our support for this event is crucial. The sheer scale of the occasion means that more than governmental efforts alone will be required. Therefore, he implores all Gambians to take ownership of the OIC and recognize how fortunate we are to host such esteemed global figures. This is a moment for us to unite as a unified people and nation, setting aside any political differences for the greater good. Such actions are essential for maintaining a healthy democracy. Our collective responsibility is to offer unwavering support and innovative ideas to ensure this event is an undeniable success.

GDC noted that the OIC’s success or failure would significantly impact The Gambia. Despite differing opinions, it is an opportunity for everyone to work towards a successful outcome. It is essential to recognize the efforts of former President Yahya Jammeh, whose work allowed The Gambia to host the OIC in a short amount of time. Although Jammeh’s bid for the OIC to be hosted in 2019 was unsuccessful due to the 2016 presidential election, congratulations are for President Barrow and his government to move forward with the OIC. The government can rest assured that they have the support and best wishes of the people during the two historic days of May 4 and 5, 2024.
