The Abubakary Jawara Foundation has generously donated D500,000 to the Gambia Armed Forces GAP to restore Hamza Barracks.
In July, a fire broke out at Hamza Barracks in Banjul, impacting numerous military personnel and their families by destroying their residences and belongings. As a temporary measure, the affected families were relocated to Friendship Hostel in Bakau while the armed forces collaborated with relevant authorities to address the situation.
Following an assessment of the damage by the Minister of Defence, Serign Modou Njie, CDS Gen Mamat O Cham, his deputy, the Commander of GNA, and the National Assembly Members for Banjul North and South, efforts have been focused on restoring the barracks.
In response to the incident, the Abubakary Jawara Foundation, under the leadership of CEO Abubakary Jawara, has not only made a significant donation but also offered to undertake the renovation through its construction company. The construction company has already commenced the preparatory work at the site, demonstrating the foundation’s unwavering commitment to the restoration of Hamza Barracks.
Mr. Abubakary Jawara emphasized that the donation is part of the foundation’s social corporate responsibility, highlighting the critical role played by the army as one of the country’s essential security institutions. He stated, as a foundation, we are committed to assisting Gambians and the government in times of need, especially about security institutions. Mr. Jawara underscored the urgency of the situation, recognizing that some residents are currently displaced and facing prolonged difficulties. He reaffirmed the foundation’s commitment to promptly addressing the restoration efforts, ensuring that the affected families can return to their homes as soon as possible.
