The World Health Organization (WHO) launched the “3 by 35” initiative on July 3, aiming to encourage countries to raise taxes on tobacco, alcohol, and sugary drinks by at least 50% by 2035.
The initiative seeks to combat chronic diseases, generate US$1 trillion in revenue over the next decade, and reduce consumption of harmful products while funding healthcare.
The goals of the initiative include Reducing harmful consumption through increased taxes. Raising revenue for essential health programs, including universal health coverage. And Building political support by forming alliances among various stakeholders.
The WHO also advocates for the elimination of tax breaks for unhealthy industries and supports fair taxation to enhance public health and advance Sustainable Development Goals.
