Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni, who has been in power since 1986, plans to run for re-election for a seventh term in the January 2026 elections, as confirmed by a senior official from his National Resistance Movement party.
At 80 years old, he faced criticism for constitutional changes that extended presidential terms and eliminated age limits. His primary opponent is expected to be Bobi Wine, a musician-turned-politician who previously claimed the 2021 election results were unfair.
Yoweri Museveni has been the leader of Uganda since 1986 and is the fourth longest-serving leader in Africa. The leaders who have served longer are Teodoro Obiang (Equatorial Guinea), Paul Biya (Cameroon), and Denis Sassou-Nguesso (Congo Republic).
Museveni’s long rule has been attributed to popular support despite accusations of intimidation from human rights groups and opposition leaders.
