Togo has suspended broadcasts from two French state-owned networks, Radio France International (RFI) and France 24, for three months. This action is due to claims of biased reporting.
The High Authority for Audiovisual Communication stated that these networks had repeatedly faced issues with impartiality and fact-checking. They said that recent broadcasts had harmed the country’s stability and image.
This decision comes as President Faure Gnassingbé faces increased pressure over proposed constitutional changes that many critics call a constitutional coup.
The chair of the Togolese Media Observatory understood the ruling but disagreed with it. He hopes for a discussion to allow media operations to resume.
Protests are planned next week following previous crackdowns, as tensions continue to rise in the country.
