South Africa has proposed a trade deal to buy liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States. In return, South Africa would not have to pay duties on vehicle exports to the US.
The plan includes importing 75 to 100 petajoules of LNG each year for 10 years. This could generate $900 million to $1.2 billion in trade annually and a total of $9 billion to $12 billion over the decade.
The proposal aims to strengthen South Africa’s economy and improve its strained relations with the US. The automotive industry is vital to South Africa, accounting for about 5% of its GDP. Previously, US President Trump threatened to impose a 30% tariff on South African exports.
