Somalia has launched its first National Counter-IED Strategy to combat improvised explosive devices (IEDs) used by Al-Shabaab, which has been recognized as a significant step by the United Nations.
The strategy emphasizes proactive measures and intelligence gathering. Key actions include enhancing explosive disposal units, fostering collaboration among relevant agencies, and enacting legislation to regulate bomb-making materials.
With over 1,400 IED-related casualties reported in 2024, the strategy is urgent. The UN’s Mine Action Service has supported training for Somali security forces. Plans include establishing a National Counter-IED Centre and a monitoring department to improve national security.
