Sierra Leone’s President, Julius Maada Bio, was elected on June 22 to lead the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

He aims to address challenges such as violence, economic issues, and member states existing the group. Bio plans to focus on democracy, security cooperation, and financial integration while acknowledging ongoing insecurity in the Sahel region, including terrorism and political instability.

He faces domestic challenges, such as a drug crisis and a stagnant economy. Recently, ECOWAS has struggled with the departures of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, which have formed a new security group and shifted alliances towards Russia amid increasing jihadist violence.
