The Southern African Development Community (SADC) is under pressure to change its external partnerships and improve regional cooperation.
This is due to doubts about U.S. trade preferences and increasing global tariffs. At recent meetings in Harare, SADC officials discussed the need for member countries to set their trade priorities and enhance their negotiation skills.
They expressed concerns about the uncertain future of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), which allows certain African nations to access U.S. markets without paying duties.
Currently, trade between SADC countries accounts for only 18% of the total. There is an urgent call for the full implementation of the SADC Free Trade Area. SADC leaders emphasize the need for unity and stronger regional cooperation to ensure economic stability in a changing global trade environment.
