Preparation for the 2026 Ecomansa Research Trip to Senegal

By Modou K. Drammeh, Sohna Mbaye, Saikou Touray, Muhammed Daine, Malleh Jarju, & Ebrima Dem Ndow

The live stream, moderated by Modu K Drammeh and co-hosted by Sohna Mbaye, centers on educational initiatives at the School of Business and Public Administration at the University of The Gambia, in collaboration with ARPS Media (arpsmedia.com).

This event highlights the significant role of the Economics and Management Sciences Students Association (ECOMANSA) and its annual Research Trip, which enhances student welfare and fosters community engagement.

The 2026 trip will focus on conducting commercial research in West Africa. A key project, titled “Youth Agri Entrepreneurship at Horticultural Incubation,” aims to explore agricultural models in Senegal and The Gambia, promoting youth involvement in the farming sector.

The project’s objectives include identifying challenges such as limited funding and insufficient market support, and encouraging collaboration between local agricultural systems and development partners to tackle unemployment and mitigate illegal migration.

The research will assess horticultural trends, with particular attention to the recent decline in Senegal’s horticultural exports, and will collect data through interviews and questionnaires targeting farmer organizations.

A planned research trip to Dakar, Senegal, will accommodate 150 to 200 students to facilitate cultural exposure and experiential learning. Key elements for engaging youth in agriculture include changing mindsets, building networks, enhancing career readiness, and inspiring them through the success of established entrepreneurs.

The estimated budget for the research trip is GMD 5,000, and we are seeking donations to support underprivileged students.

Trip Cost and Services: The trip fee is D5,000 and includes food and accommodation. This pricing is considered reasonable given the range of services provided to students.

Logistics Preparation: The logistics team has successfully secured 90% of the necessary arrangements, including transportation for approximately 200 students and immigration clearance.

Financial Management: There are concerns about transparency and accountability, particularly regarding oversight of ticket sales and donor contributions.

Student Transition and Engagement: Students may encounter challenges adjusting to shared accommodations; therefore, a structured schedule will be provided to accommodate diverse interests.

Communication Needs: Effective communication is essential for addressing student concerns and ensuring a smooth experience throughout the trip.

Cultural and Academic Impact: This trip is instrumental in enhancing students’ cultural awareness and academic development, fostering tolerance and interaction.

Safety and Logistics: Emphasizing safety measures and the collaboration between the finance and logistics teams is of utmost priority.

Student Responsibilities: Students must sign consent forms and maintain discipline throughout the trip.

Financial Contribution: The total cost of the trip is D725,000, which is funded by contributions from all students. Executive members are encouraged to contribute D1,500 each.

Additional Provisions: Accommodations will prioritize safety and comfort, and complimentary T-shirts, sanitary supplies, and subsidized site visits will be provided.
