A recent survey by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in The Gambia reveals significant doubt about the Government’s commitment to the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC) recommendations.
Out of 746 participants, mainly victims of human rights violations under the Jammeh administration, 84% are seeking more than apologies—calling for reparations, assistance, and accountability.
Despite the Government accepting most TRRC recommendations, only 31% of respondents have confidence in the justice system. Frustration over judicial reforms is evident, with only 34% of respondents satisfied with the progress.
While many believe the TRRC Implementation Plan addresses the needs of women and girls, there are demands for enhanced support services.
The survey highlights the need for improved transparency, communication, and decisive actions to foster trust and reconciliation in The Gambia’s transitional justice process.
