Emmanuel Joof, the National Human Rights Commission chairman, emphasized that genuine and sustainable Peace necessitates access to justice, equality, and harmony during his remarks at the UTG Social Sciences and Humanities Students’ Association event.

He asserted that true Peace extends beyond merely the absence of conflict; it involves creating conditions where individuals can live with dignity and security and where human rights are respected, allowing for socioeconomic development to flourish. Joof noted that inequality, injustice, and oppression can incite conflict and hinder potential growth.

Reflecting on The Gambia’s history, particularly the violations of rights experienced under former President Yahya Jammeh’s regime, he acknowledged the prevailing atmosphere of fear and instability. Since the political transition in 2017, significant strides have been made towards achieving Peace and justice, instilling a sense of hope and optimism. Joof called upon young Gambians to actively foster a culture of Peace in every facet of society.
