M23 militants have taken control of the strategic town of Lunyasenge in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), resulting in at least 17 deaths, including seven soldiers. Despite recent calls for a ceasefire, clashes continue in North Kivu, South Kivu, and Ituri, with M23 expanding its control over additional villages.

The DRC army has condemned the attack as a “flagrant violation” of the truce and has reserved the right to respond. Meanwhile, delegations from the rebel faction and the government are engaged in critical peace talks in Doha to address the ongoing humanitarian crisis and mitigate fears of the conflict spreading beyond the DRC’s borders. The violence has already led to the displacement of millions.
