To improve media coverage of the Truth, Reconciliation, and Reparations Commission (TRRC) reports, the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA), in collaboration with the Gambia Press Union and supported by the European Union, launched a two-day training workshop for journalists and press editors on Monday at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara Conference Centre.

The initiative aims to equip media professionals with conflict-sensitive reporting skills that promote healing and accountability within Gambian society.

Muhammad Bah, president of the Gambia Press Union, emphasized journalists’ vital role in fostering national healing and reconciliation. He stated, “Our stories must promote healing, accountability, and reconciliation rather than division or sensationalism.”

Jainaba Faye, head of IDEA in The Gambia, highlighted the importance of ethical journalism in the TRRC process. She called for sensitivity and respect toward victims and their families, asserting that it is morally imperative to minimize harm, avoid stigmatization, and protect the identities of vulnerable individuals.

Enya Braun, representing the European Union, underscored the significant truths uncovered by the TRRC regarding past human rights violations. She emphasized the EU’s essential role as a supporter and facilitator of change, capable of fostering understanding and accountability within society.

The TRRC was established following the fall of Yahya Jammeh’s 22-year regime, which was marked by severe human rights abuses. The commission aims to address the deep scars left by this past. Its final report, released in 2021, detailed these abuses and provided recommendations for accountability, reparations, and the reforms necessary to prevent future violations.

IDEA focuses on empowering citizens to drive democratic change at various levels. It produces comparative knowledge in electoral processes, constitution building, and political participation. By sharing this knowledge with local stakeholders, it supports democratic reform and facilitates dialogue, aiming to enhance democracy’s capacity and legitimacy while promoting inclusive participation and accountable representation.
