An international court in Washington, DC, has temporarily banned Niger from selling uranium reserves due to a dispute with the French mining firm Orano.
The court ordered Niger to halt the sale and release Orano’s representative, who had been detained since May. Following a military junta takeover in 2023, Niger expelled French military personnel and suspended Orano’s operations.
Orano alleges that over 1,000 tonnes of uranium, worth more than $200 million, remain undelivered. If Niger does not comply, Orano may seek claims for assets in other countries. A final decision from the tribunal may take months or years.
