The International Criminal Court (ICC) convicted former Sudanese militia commander Ali Muhammad Ali Abd-Al-Rahman (Ali Kushayb) on 27 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity related to the Darfur conflict, marking the first such conviction since the ICC was established in 2005.
He was found guilty of serious offenses, including murder, rape, and torture, based on testimony from 56 witnesses. The Darfur conflict began in 2003, leading to significant violence and displacement, and the situation remains dire with ongoing reports of atrocities and famine.
This ruling represents an important step toward justice for the victims of the Darfur conflict.
