The African Centre for Human Rights Commission, in collaboration with Space 4 Change, has released a report that underscores the escalating security threats to human rights across Africa.

The findings, unveiled in Banjul, assess the human rights landscape in the region, with a particular focus on the challenges encountered by civil society actors.

At the report’s launch, Anna Foster, Executive Director of the African Centre for Human Rights Commission, described the publication as timely while expressing concerns about the state of civic freedoms on the continent. “To make a meaningful intervention, we require research that accurately reflects the realities on the ground,” she stated. “Civic space has been contracting in recent years, and, in some countries, it has been entirely eradicated.”

Victoria Ibezim-Ohaeri, Director of Space 4 Change, emphasized that the reports reveal a troubling trend of governments prioritizing security over human rights. “Nations are increasingly placing security above all else, including human rights. This poses a significant concern, and these reports seek to address that issue,” she remarked.
