Halifa Sallah, a prominent figure in the opposition PDOIS, has addressed ongoing speculation regarding a possible return to the political arena, which has left many Gambians questioning his intentions. Revered as one of The Gambia’s most respected politicians, Sallah stepped back from politics following the last presidential election.

In an interview with Star Radio, the veteran politician dismissed these rumors as “irrelevant.” He acknowledged that while many people are concerned about his departure from the political scene, he is not fixated on holding a government position. He underscored that every Gambian has the constitutional right to vote and to be voted for. “I do not seek a government job. My involvement has always been driven by a desire to contribute to the betterment of the country rather than a necessity for political office. We have been raised to love our country and our continent and to contribute to their development,” he stated.

Sallah remarked, “What Gambians have entrusted me with, I believe I can fulfill effectively, and I remain ready to serve them. However, the question of a comeback is not significant; Gambia does not require anyone to seek permission to serve. When I ran in the presidential election, I garnered 32,000 votes, which reflects how the public perceives me. I confronted significant challenges in 2016, only to return and express my desire to serve. Those 32,000 votes speak volumes.”

He reiterated his commitment to supporting any initiative led by earnest Gambians dedicated to the nation’s upliftment. “I am prepared to collaborate with those who genuinely wish to rescue The Gambia and help it achieve its developmental goals rather than those merely vying for positions. I assure you that I am willing to share my insights with anyone committed to the country’s progress,” he concluded.
