President Adama Barrow has called for global unity in the fight against Islamophobia during his address on the International Day for Combating Islamophobia, observed on March 15. Barrow underscored that Islamophobia breeds division, hostility, and social instability. He highlighted the fundamental teachings of Islam, which advocate for peace and tolerance, urging nations to confront the increasing anti-Muslim sentiments worldwide.
As Chairman of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), President Barrow emphasized the necessity of collective efforts to combat discrimination and safeguard Muslim communities. He advocated for promoting interfaith dialogue and understanding to foster harmonious societies. “Islam is a religion of peace, compassion, and beauty. Its teachings strongly emphasize justice, mercy, and the sanctity of human life. The Holy Qur’an reminds us, ‘ Whoever saves one life, it is as if they have saved all of humanity’ (5:32). This serves as a profound testament to the value Islam places on every individual, irrespective of their faith or background,” he stated.
Mr. Barrow further remarked that despite the universal values that unite humanity, many individuals continue to face discrimination, violence, and exclusion merely due to their faith. He asserted that such actions undermine the principles of justice, freedom, and human dignity that all nations must uphold. “Islamophobia fractures societies fosters hostility and jeopardizes the harmony we strive to achieve in an increasingly interconnected world. As leaders, nations, and members of a global community, we must stand united in taking concrete steps to combat Islamophobia. We must collaborate to dispel stereotypes, challenge hate speech, and build bridges of understanding and harmony. We must ensure that no community is marginalized because of their religion.”
