The Gambia’s Directorate of Non-Communicable Diseases recently hosted a five-day workshop aimed at enhancing the implementation of the Protocol to Eliminate Illicit Trade in Tobacco Products.
The event, held at the Ocean Bay Hotel in Bakau, featured health officials and WHO representatives, underscoring the country’s commitment to enhanced tobacco control.
Dr. Nathan Nsubuga Bakyaita addressed the serious health issues from tobacco use, which contributes to 3.3% of annual deaths and significant healthcare costs.
At the same time, Dr. Yusupha Touray emphasized that the illegal tobacco trade undermines national control efforts and exacerbates non-communicable diseases.
The workshop concluded with a commitment to strengthen enforcement, improve laws, enhance cross-border cooperation, and raise public awareness about the risks associated with the illicit tobacco trade, aligning with broader health goals in The Gambia.
