The Gambia Police Force (GPF) received eight well-trained K-9 dogs, commonly known as detective dogs, on Tuesday to help tackle crimes in the country. After completing the first phase of training with handlers, the police plan to establish a K-9 Unit within the Police Intervention Unit in Kanifing.

These trained dogs will assist in detecting illicit substances, apprehending suspects, and performing search and rescue operations, demonstrating the force’s commitment to modern and effective policing methods.

It is worth noting that a police dog, also known as a K-9, is a dog that is trained to assist law enforcement officers. Their duties may include:

  • Searching for drugs and explosives.
  • Locating missing people.
  • Finding crime scene evidence.
  • Protecting officers and other people.
  • Attacking suspects who flee from officers.
