Authorities have intensified security measures across the nation in response to a rise in armed robberies that have raised public alarm.

This decision comes on the heels of a brazen attack on Access Bank in Brusubi on Wednesday, where masked robbers escaped with an undisclosed sum of money. The assailants gained entry through the back gate while the bank remained open for business. Numerous other robbery incidents have occurred nationwide, including a recent armed assault on a GNPC fuel station in Farafenni, which resulted in a police officer being injured during a shootout with the suspects.

Considering the growing frequency of these crimes, Seedy Muctarr Touray, the Inspector General of Police in The Gambia, addressed the nation, pledging to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. He described the attacks as a “direct challenge to the overall security governance of this country,” highlighting the audacity of individuals targeting a bank during operational hours.

The Inspector General encouraged the public to continue their daily activities and assured them of the police’s unwavering commitment to fighting crime. “We are actively revamping and enhancing our strategies while improving our intelligence capabilities. The response time for addressing criminal activities in this country will be significantly shortened,” he stated in his televised address.

He further affirmed, “Your safety is our priority, and we will increase police patrols and strengthen the night patrol task force to apprehend those responsible for these heinous acts swiftly.”
