Rwanda received its first group of seven deportees from the United States in mid-August as part of an agreement with Washington.
The Rwandan government reviewed each case, and the deportees are currently staying with an international organization, where they will receive job training and healthcare.
While three deportees wish to return home, four prefer to remain in Rwanda. The agreement allows Rwanda to accept up to 250 deportees and includes other African countries, such as Uganda, Eswatini, and South Sudan.
However, human rights experts’ express concerns that these deportations may violate international law by sending individuals to potential abuse.
