A delegation from Ecowas was dispatched to Banjul for a five-day field validation to oversee and assess the humanitarian relief efforts addressing The Gambia’s food crisis and flood disaster. The delegation expressed satisfaction with allocating funds, a crucial aspect of their mission.

The mission’s goal was to ensure the collaborative and transparent delivery of adequate humanitarian aid while holding accountable those involved. It involved thorough field visits, engaging with stakeholders, evaluating relief efforts, and identifying areas for improvement. The mission was carried out by representatives from the Ecowas Commission, the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA), the government, and various implementing partners. As part of this undertaking, the delegation visited the flood-affected communities of Nyofelleh, Fass Omar Saho, and Munyagen to meticulously assess the impact of the humanitarian aid provided in response to the 2022 flood disaster and food crises.

Throughout the visit, the delegation had the opportunity to interact with local beneficiaries who expressed sincere gratitude for Ecowas’s assistance. This support has played a crucial role in meeting urgent needs, such as securing essential food supplies and repairing homes damaged by the floods. The beneficiaries emphasized the significant relief this aid has brought, particularly in helping stabilize their living conditions in the aftermath of the disaster.

A resident of Fass Omar Saho, speaking on behalf of the community, expressed their profound appreciation for the support from ECOWAS. They mentioned that it enabled them to rebuild their homes and ensure food security for their families. However, they noted that many others in the community still require assistance, and they hope this support can also be extended to help them. Similarly, a beneficiary in Munyagen stated that the financial aid, though modest, had a meaningful impact on their lives. It allowed them to purchase food and carry out essential home repairs severely affected by the floods. They also expressed the hope that ECOWAS will continue to expand this assistance to reach more people.

The delegation observed that the residents particularly appreciated the transparent and efficient aid delivery process, as it helped to minimize conflicts and ensure that the most vulnerable individuals were prioritized. The community strongly desired ECOWAS to maintain its commitment to supporting member states, including The Gambia, in their recovery from these challenges. This field visit highlighted the positive outcomes of Ecowas’s humanitarian efforts and shed light on the ongoing challenges these communities face. The feedback gathered during the visit will be invaluable in shaping future Ecowas humanitarian strategies, ensuring that the relief efforts are sustained and expanded to address the needs of additional vulnerable populations.
