The ECOWAS Excellence Awards for Journalists recognized twelve exceptional journalists from Nigeria (five), Benin (three), and one each from Senegal, The Gambia, Togo, and Guinea-Bissau, during a ceremony in Banjul, The Gambia, on July 25.
This event celebrated the 50th Anniversary of ECOWAS and highlighted the critical role of the media in regional integration, development, and democratic accountability.
Awards were given in several categories, focusing on impactful storytelling about ECOWAS initiatives. Mr. Kolley, a representative of the ECOWAS President, praised journalists for their role in shaping narratives and ensuring accountability.
Mrs. Miatta Lily French, the ECOWAS Permanent Representative, commended the awardees for their dedication to public service and the resilience of the media.
The Permanent Secretary of The Gambia’s Ministry of Information spoke on behalf of Dr. Ismaila Ceesay, stressing support for press freedom and regional cooperation during the awards ceremony. The awardees were honored for their efforts to promote peace and democracy in West Africa.
Mr. Abdoulie Gassama, a communications expert, discussed the meticulous selection process for the awards. He emphasized the importance of truth, clarity, and integrity in journalism.
The Journalist Excellence Award celebrates media professionals whose work positively impacts citizens and supports the ECOWAS vision of a transparent West African community.
The event featured cultural performances and was attended by high-level dignitaries, underscoring the vital role of the press in democracy and civic engagement.
