On May 21, President Donald Trump hosted South African President Cyril Ramaphosa at the White House for a meeting that was marked by tension.
During their discussion, Trump accused the South African government of permitting a “genocide” against white Afrikaner farmers, a claim that many within that community dispute.
Ramaphosa aimed to improve US-South Africa relations, which have significantly deteriorated since the end of apartheid in 1994. In response to Trump’s allegations, he highlighted that several members of his administration are Afrikaners.
Additionally, Trump presented a video that included clips of controversial remarks made by a minority party leader. Ramaphosa said he felt it had gone “very well after the meeting.”
