The annual list of neglected displacement crises highlights situations that lack humanitarian funding, media attention, and political support.
In 2024, Ethiopia ranks second, its highest position yet, while Mozambique is in third place for the first time. Burkina Faso, which was first for the past two years, is now fourth, and the Democratic Republic of Congo is eighth.
Jan Egeland, Secretary General of NRC, points out that displaced people are becoming increasingly overlooked due to rising nationalism in donor countries. He emphasizes the importance of adequate funding and effective conflict resolution. The humanitarian funding gap for 2024 is USD 25 billion, leaving more than half of the needs unmet.
Cameroon remains a significant part of the list due to ongoing crises, which have led to a lack of media coverage and diplomatic action. Djeinabou, a refugee in Cameroon, shares worry about the future of their children.
The list aims to raise awareness of suffering that lacks international attention, with the complete 2024 list including the top ten countries: Cameroon, Ethiopia, Mozambique, Burkina Faso, Mali, Uganda, Iran, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Honduras, and Somalia.
