The Mo Ibrahim Foundation’s 2024 Index highlights The Gambia as one of the top ten African nations making strides in good governance despite challenges such as declining security and diminished democratic participation.
The index assesses governance trends from 2014 to 2023, revealing that 33 out of 54 African countries must enhance their governance efforts. Overall, governance progress in Africa stagnated in 2022 due to ongoing conflicts and weakening democratic freedoms.
Nevertheless, 13 countries—including Egypt, Madagascar, and Morocco—have demonstrated noteworthy improvements in governance. Gambia, along with Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Angola, Mauritania, and Djibouti, ranks among the top ten most improved nations over the past decade.
