Yerro Saidy, a former narcotics officer, was sentenced to 30 years in prison by the Gambian High Court for his role in a violent robbery.

On July 27, 2023, he and his accomplices plotted to steal 600,000 dalasis from a currency exchange operator. During the robbery, Saidy pretended to be a police officer and carried a loaded gun.

The court found substantial evidence against him despite his claims of innocence and assertions that he had been working undercover. He was convicted of conspiracy, robbery with violence, and impersonating a public officer.

The judge highlighted the seriousness of the crime, pointing out the use of a weapon and the organized nature of the robbery. Saidy’s lawyer requested leniency because of his health and status as a first-time offender.
