Opinion: Rebuilding lives with dignity: What refugees teach us about hope

Every day at Hanan Relief Group (HRG), I am reminded of the profound resilience of the human spirit. The refugees who arrive in our community have endured war, persecution, displacement, and deep loss. Yet they show up ready to rebuild not only their futures, but their sense of home, belonging, and purpose. Our role at HRG is not simply to help them. It is to walk beside them with dignity, compassion, and a shared belief that their success strengthens us all.

Hanan Relief Group was formed with a simple conviction: no family should have to rebuild alone. Refugees bring extraordinary strengths, including courage, perseverance, and determination, and our responsibility is to create the stability and opportunity those strengths deserve. That conviction continues to guide every program and every relationship we build.

Our work begins with the essentials. We help newcomers secure safe housing, navigate complex education systems, and access the resources needed to reestablish security. A home is more than walls. It is the first step toward healing. Once a family is safely housed, the path to independence becomes clearer. Children enroll in school. Parents begin language classes. Adults prepare for employment.

Employment is transformative. A job restores dignity and hope. It is why workforce development remains central to our mission. Through strong community partnerships, we connect families with training, certifications, and meaningful work. The smile on a parent’s face when they earn their first paycheck in America is something I wish every policymaker could witness.

As our community grows, so has the Hanan Relief Group. We serve families from Syria, Palestine, Afghanistan, Sudan, Congo, Burma, Venezuela and beyond. And as needs have expanded, so has our mission. We have rebranded to reflect a broader truth: we are no longer serving only refugees. We now serve all vulnerable populations, including immigrants, low-income families, single parents, and seniors. Compassion should never be limited by labels.

This mission is personal to me. I know the fear and uncertainty that come with displacement as having parents who immigrated. I also know the power of a community that chooses empathy over indifference.

Yet today’s moment calls for more from all of us. Families across our region are facing rising housing costs, employment barriers, and public debates that too often dehumanize them. These are parents who want stability for their children. Young people eager to learn and contribute. Neighbors who want to belong.

I have also witnessed something deeply inspiring: families we once served now give back. Many volunteer with us, helping new arrivals find their footing. Their generosity reflects what is possible when a community invests in people.

As we enter the holiday season, many nonprofits are struggling to meet growing needs and so much uncertainty. That is why I am making a heartfelt plea: please consider supporting Hanan Relief Group.
