President’s Office States the Redeployment of AG Ceesay is not Intended to Disrupt the NAO

The Gambian President’s Office defends the merit-based appointment of Modou Ceesay as Minister of Trade, clarifies it did not aim to disrupt the National Audit Office, notes his refusal, and backs new Auditor General Cherno Amadou Sowe amid ongoing transparency commitments.

The Office of the President stated that the appointment of former Auditor General Modou Ceesay as Minister of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration, and Employment was based on his qualifications and was not meant to disrupt the National Audit Office’s functions.

Ceesay was notified of his appointment on September 10, 2025, but declined it in a letter dated September 11, 2025.

The office also expressed support for the new Auditor General, Cherno Amadou Sowe, and emphasized its commitment to the rule of law, transparency, and accountability in public finance management.
