President of Guinea-Bissau Holds onto the Presidency Even though His Term has Expired.

Guinea-Bissau’s president, Embalo, remains in power beyond his term end on September 4, which the opposition deems illegal.

He intends to stay until the elections on November 23, aiming for a second term. This situation has sparked concerns about a constitutional crisis and political instability, as the Supreme Court upheld his term while the opposition argues it ended on February 27.

No parliamentary elections have occurred since the last assembly was dissolved in 2023. A West African regional group’s mission to address the crisis was cut short after Embalo allegedly threatened to expel them.
