Senegal recently experienced the loss of at least 33 lives due to traffic accidents during the Grand Magal pilgrimage, a notable increase from 16 fatalities last year (2024).

This event, important for the Mouride brotherhood, draws millions to Touba to honor their founder. The National Fire Brigade reported 341 road accidents and provided medical aid to 571 people.

The rise in fatalities is attributed to speeding, reckless driving, and slippery conditions resulting from recent rainfall, underscoring the ongoing road safety challenges during major events and the need for improved safety measures and increased public awareness.
