On August 17, Residents from Kartong and Berending took to the streets to protest what they view as an illegal boundary demarcation by the Ministry of Local Government and Lands.
The rally started in Kartong and concluded at the Fotindalla bridge, which the demonstrators assert marks the historical border with Gunjur. The protesters held signs that conveyed their resolve to protect their traditional boundaries and expressed worries that the government’s actions might incite unrest.
They highlighted their success in several legal cases related to land disputes and demanded that the justice system be honored. Organizers of the protest noted that the issue is set to return to court and appealed for calm among the participants.
