Gambia Ministry of Health, in Partnership with UNICEF Gambia, Promotes Mental Health in Schools

The Ministry of Health and UNICEF Gambia launched the National School Mental Health Programme, piloted in the Upper River Region, to enhance student mental health through teacher and student training in awareness, psychological first aid, and stigma reduction.

The Ministry of Health, in partnership with UNICEF Gambia, is implementing the National School Mental Health Programme, based on recommendations from The Gambia Mental Health Investment Case Report 2025.

A pilot program took place in the Upper River Region from August 4 to 6, 2025, which included training for teachers and students on mental health awareness, psychological first aid, stigma reduction, and creating supportive classroom environments.

This initiative represents a significant step forward in enhancing student mental health and establishing comprehensive mental health systems within schools.
